Updates to the UCR University Extension Intensive English Program

As you know, due to the impacts of Covid-19 on student mobility, we placed our in-person Intensive English, and the emergency online version of that program on hiatus beginning Summer 2020. In this, we continued to offer our new Online ESL program for intermediate and high-intermediate students, in a 12-week, on-demand format. This offering has been met with success over the past year, and we will continue to offer Online ESL in an open-enrollment format for any student who meets the level requirements. While the University of California system has announced that it plans to re-open all campuses, including UCR, in Fall 2021, we have made the decision to keep the in-person Intensive English Program on hiatus until public health and global travel are in a stronger state, and we are able to build enrollments that will sustain the program.

Students will continue to have the opportunity to participate in the Online ESL program each quarter, and partners will have the opportunity to request in-person closed courses for groups of Intensive English students. A closed course is custom designed for a designated group of students from the same institution; students would need to come with the same level of English (as they often do for custom programs), and costs will vary pending the number of students and length of study. Additionally, partners can request a custom live distance-learning offering of ESL for groups of students, offered in your time zone.

We are providing some additional information below for your reference. Please let us know what questions you might have after reviewing this email - we look forward to discussing them with you further.

What is UCR University Extension's Online ESL program like?

In order to meet students’ language learning needs, UCR University Extension is offering online English language courses at the intermediate and high-intermediate levels that connect students from diverse backgrounds in various global locales to asynchronous English language study. This means that students can engage with course content on our CANVAS learning platform in their own time zone.

UCR University Extension's online English language program curriculum, just like our face-to-face program curriculum, was created in partnership with National Geographic and TED, and provides students with a content-based and multimedia-rich digital platform learning experience. In this program, students not only develop the English language skills necessary to advance into UCR University Extension Academic and Professional programs, but students in our online ESL classes develop necessary professional soft skills, such as critical thinking and analysis, teamwork and collaboration, real-world problem solving, etc.

Our Online ESL course content is designed to allow students to transition from our grounded ESL courses to online ESL learning, and vice versa with ease. This means that students can start their English language study in an online class, and later transition to face-to-face English language courses in the future when UCR University Extension resumes in-person English language course offerings.

Is UCR University Extension accepting Intensive English Applications for 2022? We are unable to accept applications for Intensive English at this time and will announce applications when the program resumes.

How does a student test for English level assessment? The student will test from home or school via the Duolingo English Test. It is a convenient, fast, and affordable English proficiency test that can be taken online from a computer with a camera for $49. The test will provide us with the student's overall proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample. Certified results are given within two days and will be shared instantly with UCR University Extension.

Will UCR University Extension's Intensive English Program return in January of 2022? We are unable to determine that at this time.
