Be a Champion for Student Success

UCR University Extension is committed to providing extraordinary learning experiences to students of all ages - regionally, nationally, and internationally. The academic and professional programs offered through UCR University Extension help individuals advance careers, increase opportunities for economic mobility, and explore personal growth. Financial aid is not an option for students who wish to pursue a certificate or class at UCR University Extension, so the Student Success Scholarships play an important role in helping students achieve their academic goals, through the generosity of our donors.

UCR University Extension's mission is to "transform lives through the power of lifelong learning." Lori Johnston earned her Professional Certificate in Project Management, thanks to one of our generous donors. At age 50, Lori was laid-off and needed to upskill in order to move into a new position. Lori received our Student Success Scholarship which allowed her to take multiple classes to earn her certification quickly, and get back to work.

Planned Giving

Whether you would like to put your donation to work today, or have it benefit UCR University Extension as part of your legacy, you can find a charitable plan that lets you provide for your family, and support Student Success Scholarships.

Ways to Make a Planned Gift

Wills and Living Trusts

A simple and versatile way to ensure UCR University Extension can provide an outstanding education for years to come is a gift in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest. By including a bequest to UCR University Extension in your will or living trust, you are ensuring that we can continue our mission for years to come.

Charitable Gift Annuities

Turn Your Generosity into Lifetime Income

A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is a simple contractual arrangement between you and UCR University Extension. In exchange for your irrevocable gift of cash or marketable securities, UCR University Extension agrees to pay a fixed sum to one or two people each year for life. The older the recipient, the higher your gift annuity rate. Ultimately, your gift annuity provides vital support to UCR University Extension. Not only does this gift provide you with regular payments and allow us to further our work, but when you create a charitable gift annuity with UCR University Extension you receive a variety of tax benefits, including a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Discover a Gift that Can Benefit You, Your Family, and UCR University Extension

Do you own highly appreciated real estate or marketable securities that would trigger significant capital gains tax liability if you sold it yourself? By making an irrevocable gift of appreciated assets to a charitable remainder trust (CRT), you receive several attractive benefits while ensuring that a UCR University Extension education remains accessible to qualified students. Benefits of a charitable remainder trust include:

  • potential for a partial charitable income tax deduction
  • potential for increased income
  • up-front capital gains tax avoidance

There are two ways to receive payments with charitable remainder trusts:

  • The annuity trust pays you, each year, the same dollar amount you choose at the start. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments.
  • The unitrust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments is redetermined annually. If the value of the trust increases, so do your payments. If the value decreases, so will your payments.

Real Estate

Want to make a big gift to UCR University Extension without touching your bank account? Consider gifting us real estate. Such a generous gift helps us continue our work for years to come, and also helps you. When you give us appreciated property you have held longer than one year, you qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction. You avoid paying capital gains tax, and you no longer have to deal with that property's maintenance costs, property taxes, or insurance.

You can deed the property directly to UCR University Extension, or ask your attorney to add a few sentences in your will or trust agreement.

More Ways You Can Give

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund, which is like a charitable savings account, is an easy, cost-effective way to support UCR University Extension and other causes you love. You transfer cash or assets to a tax-exempt sponsoring organization and then recommend - but not direct - how much and how often money is granted to UCR University Extension. You centralize your giving in one location. And best of all, you can involve your family in recommending where your donor advised funds are directed. In this manner, your heirs can perpetuate your legacy.

Endowed Gifts

You have the power to help safeguard the future of UCR University Extension. By making an endowed gift, you can have an impact today and ensure our future. Here's how it works: The principal of an endowed fund - the full amount of your gift - stays intact in perpetuity, with a percentage of the earnings spent on the purpose you designate: scholarships, research or something else you're passionate about. The balance of the earnings is added to the corpus of the fund, allowing your endowment to grow and provide UCR University Extension an indefinite, reliable source of income.

Matching Funds

Many employers participate in matching gift programs that can double, triple, or quadruple your gift. Donors receive full credit for their matching gifts for the purposes of recognition and benefits. Just ask your company's personnel office for a matching gift form, fill it out, and send it in with your contribution. We'll take it from there. For more information, please contact Cynthia Welle.
