You’ve already come so far as a professional. You’ve earned your Bachelor’s degree, built your foundation, and taken the first steps in your career. But now, you’re ready for something more: More opportunities. More clarity. More confidence in the direction you’re headed.
For many international graduates, the challenge isn’t ambition. It’s access. Gaining practical experience in the U.S. and building global credibility can feel out of reach without the right path forward.
That’s where UCR University Extension’s Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma (PGC/D) programs come in. These programs were built for international students who are ready to grow, but need a plan that’s flexible, focused, and grounded in real-world results.
Whether your goal is to shift careers, gain U.S. work experience, or build a network that spans industries and countries, this program is designed to help you get there with momentum, not guesswork.
Here’s how it works—and why it works.
What Is the Program, Really?
Each PGC/D program combines academic learning with real-world application. Over three quarters, you’ll gain industry-aligned skills, complete a 12-week internship in your field, and become eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT)—a temporary employment opportunity in the U.S. that can last up to 12 months (or 36 months for STEM-designated programs).
You’ll gain both experience and a gold standard University of California diploma, one of the most respected public university systems in the world. It’s a name employers recognize, and one that carries weight wherever your career takes you.
Continued learning doesn’t happen in isolation, nor should it! Students consistently share how the team goes above and beyond to make them feel seen, supported, and set up for success. From academic advising and career coaching to help with your internship placement and OPT application, we’re with you every step of the way.

5 Reasons This Program Works for Your Career (and Your Life)
1. You Don’t Just Learn—You Intern
Unlike some postgraduate programs, the internship built into the program allows you to take what you’ve learned and apply it in a real U.S. workplace.
Whether you’re managing a project, collaborating on a team, or working one-on-one with a mentor, this hands-on experience boosts your confidence, expands your portfolio, and gives you stories to share with confidence in your next interview.
“The internship component was invaluable. It allowed me to apply what I learned in class to actual projects, making me feel more prepared and confident in my abilities. In just 9 months, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience from this opportunity.”
— Sarah Eduave, UCR PGC/D Alumna
2. You Can Work in the U.S. After You Complete the Program
Many students see the program as a launchpad, not just a credential. UCR’s PGC/D programs are OPT-eligible, which means after you complete your studies, you may be able to stay and work in the U.S. for up to 12 months in your field. For STEM programs, a 24-month extension may be possible.
This is both a job opportunity and a chance to apply your skills in an international setting, expand your professional footprint, and build lasting career momentum.
“I had great classes on campus, I found many interesting people, and great teachers. UCR prepared me very well for the future; I got many compliments while I was applying to jobs—it was really worth it.”
— Monica De Fatima Kusnick, UCR PGC/D Alumna
3. You’re Learning Skills Employers Actually Want
The curriculum isn’t theory-heavy or outdated. Every course is designed to match what today’s employers are asking for—delivered by instructors with real industry experience. Whether you’re sharpening your business acumen, learning new technologies, or practicing communication and leadership, you’re building skills you can use from day one.
With flexible formats and focused course options, you can build new skills without putting your life on hold. Whether you’re working, planning your next move, or adjusting to life in a new country, the program is designed to fit into your schedule (not compete with it).
“The curriculum was exactly what I needed—practical, hands-on, and taught by people who had actually worked in the industry.”
— Ngoc Dang, UCR PGC/D Alumna
4. You Build a Global Network That Supports Your Goals
You’re not doing this alone. At UCR University Extension, you’ll be learning alongside professionals from around the world—people who bring different perspectives, experiences, and goals to the table. These aren’t just classmates; they’re future collaborators, mentors, and part of your international support system.
“Being part of such a diverse cohort expanded my perspective and connected me with professionals from various industries and cultures.”
— Leo Toyama, UCR PGC/D Alumnus
5. You’re Supported Every Step of the Way
From day one, you’ll have access to friendly advisors, internship coordinators, OPT guidance, and instructors who truly care. Whether you’re navigating a course load, preparing for an interview, or finalizing your OPT paperwork, you’ll have a team that’s been through it all and knows how to help you succeed.
“The staff at UCR University Extension were incredibly supportive throughout my postgraduate program. From the initial application process to securing my internship, they were always there to guide me. Their assistance made navigating the complexities of studying and working in the U.S. much more manageable.”
— Ngoc Dang, UCR PGC/D Alumna
The Bottom Line: You’re Not Starting Over. You’re Leveling Up.
This isn’t about going back to school—it’s about building toward the future you want. About choosing a path that matches your ambition and supports your next move, not someday, but right now.
Whether you want to pivot into a new field, build credibility as a global professional, or finally gain the experience that makes employers take notice, UCR University Extension’s Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma programs were designed to help you get there.
Imagine walking into your next interview with a U.S. internship under your belt, a network behind you, and the confidence that comes from doing the work and seeing the results. Imagine what one year of focus, support, and real-world growth could do for the next ten.
This is your moment. You’ve already done the hard part by getting here. Now let’s take the next step… together.
