Q. What brought you to UCR University Extension?
A. I was working as a high school teacher and my principal suggested I obtain a Bilingual Authorization, as we were heading toward becoming a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) campus. My school district often works with UCR University Extension, so it was a great fit, and I’m incredibly happy I went for it.
Q. What were some of the unexpected hurdles in your journey?
A. Juggling being a parent and a full-time teacher made things difficult, but the online format allowed for flexibility, and I spent several weekends focused on completing the coursework.
Q. What were some of the unexpected benefits?
A. I enjoyed reading and learning about bilingualism, and developing a deeper understanding of how it helps students and communities.
Q. What difference did your experience at UCR University Extension make to your life path and career goals?
A. My experience helped me to get back into being a student and reignited my love for learning. I am now also more qualified to work with bilingual students--throughout my district and beyond.
Q. What are you doing now?
A. I am currently an assistant principal at the high school level and use my bilingualism every day.
Q. What have been some of the most exciting or rewarding moments of your career so far?
A. I enjoy being able to engage with students and families outside of the classroom. I love to help problem solve and support and serve the school and community.
Q. What are your hopes and aims for your future?
A. I would like to be a principal someday, but I’m not sure what level yet!
Q. In your life today, what makes you really happy?
A. My family and kids make me the happiest. I love spending time with them!
Q. What career advice would you give to graduates looking to move into your field?
A. I would encourage graduates to pursue a path in education! We need more servant-hearted and compassionate people to teach, guide, and support our students.
Thank you, Luis, for joining our community of lifelong learners to provide the best education for your students. We know how challenging it can be to juggle family and career, so congratulations on your achievement! Your district, your school, and your students are lucky to have you. You’ll be an exceptional principal when you’re ready to take that next step!
