About the Course
The region around Mammoth Mountain is one of the most scenic areas in California. It is also one of the most dangerous volcanic hazard areas in the nation. Mammoth Mountain is actually a young volcano which has erupted along the edge of that depression, and it could erupt again in the future. Explore the geologic history of the Mammoth region, discuss volcanic processes and eruptive styles, and the potential hazards of future eruptions. No previous knowledge of geology is required. Several short hikes of about one-half mile, as well as a gondola ride to the top of 11,000 foot Mammoth Mountain are part of the course. You should be in good physical condition.
