About the Course

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental aspects of the construction industry, focusing on the materials, methods, and sustainability practices essential for modern construction. Students will develop a foundational understanding of individual construction components and details, their performance requirements, and the processes of manufacture and assembly. The course emphasizes the systematic organization of materials into various building assemblies and explores current best practices within the industry. Throughout the course, students will gain insights into the environmental impacts of construction and learn to apply sustainable design principles, including LEED certification systems. A detailed examination of the physical properties of construction materials will form the basis for understanding their use in various construction contexts. The course is structured around selected divisions of the MasterFormat specification system, covering a wide range of materials and systems used in construction. Topics include concrete, masonry, metals, wood and plastics, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, specialty products, and site construction activities. Students will also explore the roles of design professionals, project delivery methods, zoning and building codes, and professional organizations within the construction industry. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively participate in the construction industry, with a particular focus on sustainability and modern construction techniques.
