Provides historical and cultural context for selected dance forms and practices. Explores dance as an art form, cultural practice, and meaning-making activity focusing on histories of race, gender, sexuality, class, and nation.
- Identify, describe, and recall central characteristics of different dance practices with attention to each form’s movement characteristics; history; narrative or intention; and the contexts and situations in which it occurs.
- Hone your writing, viewing, discussion, and critical and creative thinking skills.
- Deepen your critical thinking skills about these dance practices’ histories and current global circulations, and address the issues of race, gender, sexuality, colonization, appropriation, commodification, resilience, and empowerment that relate to these histories.
- Develop new and nuanced understandings of how dance participates in cultural and historical meaning making.
- Develop continually evolving ways of thinking about the many dance practices you’ll encounter throughout your life.
