About the Course
Presents content and pedagogical knowledge of Ethnic Studies in K-12 school settings. Prepares educators who are committed to the need for ethnic studies, and focuses on the practical application of frameworks and pedagogies in a variety of school contexts, including classrooms, schools, and communities..
- Develop an understanding of United States curricula as a settler colonial project that continues to erase Indigenous peoples as well as People of Color (de los Rios, 2018).
- Develop a critical analyses of the rhetoric, policies, and means to maintain systemic inequities in education.
- Review the existing application of and to further explore potential applications of Ethnic Studies pedagogies and literacies in a variety of academic K-12 settings.
- Engage in critical self-reflection around the impact and functions of oppression, colonialism, power and privilege in our own lives and daily lived experiences and interactions (de los Rios, 2018).
- Reflect on and apply humanizing pedagogical frameworks of hope, love, transformation, and care to inform social justice teacher identities in the classroom, community, and profession.
- Engage in teacher community that creates, cultivates, and advances ethnic studies curricula, professional development, and/or research.
