Certificate Courses

Our certificate programs are designed to be flexible, allowing you the option to take just a few courses or to earn the complete certificate. If choosing to complete the certificate, we recommend you get the most out of your experience by following the suggested completion path below.

Quarter 1

Introduction to STEM Education

What is STEM? Learn to understand the connections between curriculum standards and STEM competencies. You will discuss the newest trends in today's classrooms and explore:

  • Common Core State Standards
  • Next Generation Science Standards
  • English Language Development Standards
  • problem-based learning
  • problem solving
  • critical thinking

You will learn how to make the interdisciplinary connections required for successful teaching in a 21st Century learning environment.

Quarter 2

Access and Equity in STEM Education

3 units

You will study and discuss research on the issues of underrepresented student populations in STEM fields. You will:

  • learn to design lesson plans that address the needs of this specific audience
  • cover strategies for increasing persistence among your students
  • explore ways to build STEM identity among these underrepresented groups

Quarter 3

Instructional Strategies for Teaching STEM

EDUC X421.03

4 units

Learn to develop effective teaching practices for STEM classrooms. You will:

  • explore mathematics, science, and engineering teaching practices
  • learn to identify STEM learning outcomes
  • practice lesson design
  • discuss instructional strategies for teaching ELLs and underrepresented student groups
  • discover solid methods for increasing academic language

Best practices for student engagement and support, classroom management, and the integration and use of technology will also be presented.

Quarter 4
Quarter 5

STEM Education Capstone

EDUC X421.04

1 units

A final project-based or performance-based assessment to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of STEM education.

The assessment should highlight competencies related to your teaching practices in:

  • mathematics
  • science
  • engineering

An assessment of the needs of underrepresented student groups will also be incorporated. May only be taken after all required and elective courses have been satisfactorily completed.
