  1. Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
  2. Preliminary Teacher Credential

Masters Pathway

Transfer up to 9 units to earn a Master's degree.

Quarter 1

Teaching the Gifted and Talented: Guidance and Goals of the Program

This survey course focuses on the major components and issues of gifted and talented education. Current research provides insights into the unique needs of gifted and talented students. Topics to be addressed are: current state legislation, identification of specific characteristics of gifted students, teacher selection, four components of differentiated instruction, program standards and competencies, program assessment/evaluation, and parent involvement.

Quarter 2

Teaching the Gifted and Talented: Recognizing Individual Differences

EDUC X428.1

3 units

Exploration of the intellectual and social-emotional development of gifted students. Through case studies and within the historical context of changing views of intelligence and giftedness, this course considers the impact of learning differences, culture and language, social economics, and other exceptionalities in the development and recognition of giftedness. Particular attention is given to underachievement in gifted students, giftedness in early childhood and adolescence, gifted girls, and the relationship between creativity and giftedness.

Quarter 3

Teaching the Gifted and Talented: Approaches to Curriculum and Design

EDUC X428.08

3 units

Classroom approaches for applying current research on the education of gifted and talented students. Includes development and evaluation of curricular projects and selecting, preparing and evaluating materials. Emphasis on cultivation of high-level cognitive and affective skills and the development of leadership skills.

Quarter 4

Teaching the Gifted and Talented: Advanced Approaches to Curriculum Differentiation

EDUC X428.07

3 units

Advanced approaches to curriculum differentiation with hands-on experiences in thematic interdisciplinary teaching. Instruction examines inductive and deductive strategies, independent study and learning centers as vehicles for fostering learning skills in the classroom.
